Bayley Taylor-Law AT is a commercial accountant at BDO Gisborne and a certified Accounting Technician. Bayley has had a life-long passion for numbers and put this passion to use when she partook in the summer internship at BDO. During her first day at the firm, she fell in love with the fast-paced and human-centric nature of commercial accounting.
Bayley’s internship with BDO opened her eyes to the industry and helped her get a foot in the door.
“Accounting wasn't offered at my high school, however economics was, and I loved economics. I loved working with the share market and learning about business finance. That was really my opening into accounting. It was just a real unknown when I signed up to do my internship here at BDO because I hadn't done an accounting paper at school. But math was my interest, so that's where that sparked from,” Bayley says.
"It opens up your world to go up to that next level in accounting, whether that is management or a specialised role. I am now moving into the role where I can meet with clients and feel confident talking about their business."
“My favourite thing about my current position is that we are moving more towards advisory. This means that I am meeting with new clients. I'm in the commercial advisory team here at BDO. We deal with small, medium enterprises. It's really cool to be able to talk to them and actually help smaller enterprises grow.”
Bayley undertook the AT designation to get exposure to the industry and curate a set of skills to empower her in the future. The designation provided Bayley with the practical skills to enhance employability, leading to greater opportunities in the workplace.

The AT designation equips you with tools to work with integrity whilst working around your schedule. The designation follows the format of a diploma and can have certain credits replaced by previous qualifications. It is perfect for young professionals like Bayley who have already taken the next step in their careers.
“The course was six weeks, 10 different modules and went through all the ethical standards that you need to comply with as an accountant. It was stuff that I never actually learned in my degree. So, it was good because it was realistic. It related to what we do every day,” explains Bayley.
Follow in Bayley’s footsteps as she takes her career to the next level through the Accounting Technician designation. This short course can explain the practical dilemmas experienced by fresh graduates in their first professional roles and allow young CAs to avoid the guesswork of their early careers.
