Each year Chartered Accountants ANZ awards two deserving New Zealand accounting students with the Craig Norgate scholarships. The scholarships speak to the values and passion of its recipients in alignment with Craig Norgate’s personal commitment to accounting and the community.
The 2020 scholarships were awarded to Anna Kincheff and Candace Hipp, both recent graduates from Massey University where they studied Business and Accountancy respectively. Both young professionals expressed a clear passion for their local communities in their application letters and undertaking a career that will allow them to do impactful work and ultimately become difference makers.
Anna Kincheff feels extremely lucky to call Aotearoa New Zealand home, working for tax agency Ingham Mora in Tauranga. She is grateful for the area’s equal access to education, community members that look after each other, and a local multicultural population. She is also passionate about the agricultural sector, having grown up in a rural area surrounded by farmland and animals.
“When I was younger, I wanted to be a farmer. But when I went to school and learned that I was quite good with numbers I decided to pursue a career in accounting and I think that's how I can make a big difference,” says Anna.
“I am determined to do my part to ensure that whatever business I am fortunate enough to be involved in also values and nurtures the same attributes I am passionate about for the long-term future of both New Zealand and our planet.”
Anna shares that for her the scholarship wasn’t about the money, but being recognised for connecting with the same values that the scholarship represents.
“I know Craig Norgate was passionate about the NZ Agricultural Sector as am I. I also know that at the age of 23, it is my generation that must actively address climate change and work hard towards achieving environmental sustainability in our farming practices. This is what motivated me to apply for this scholarship,” says Anna.
Anna hopes to use her current employment as a means to gain the skills and experience required that will allow her to launch her own business and help to inject sustainability into the DNA of any future company she joins or leads.
“Being a Chartered Accountant has been a dream of mine ever since I was introduced to the accounting profession back in high school. I could not encourage students more to apply for the Craig Norgate scholarship as it’s allowed me to take the next step in realising my dream as a difference maker,”
Candace Hipp has always had a strong aptitude for numbers, but it wasn’t until she undertook some casual work with her mother-in-law during university that she fell in love with the accounting profession. It was this realisation that pushed Candace to keep learning and to study to be a CA.
“I'm someone that likes to keep going, I don't like to stop and be stuck, I just want to keep doing the things that inspire me and help me to feel fulfilled. That's why I chose the CA Program, so that I could continue learning and keep pushing myself on to bigger and better things,” says Candace.
For Candace, living in a close-knit town has given her unique opportunities to step up and give back to the people that have always been there for her. She is excited to be able to use her learnings as a CA to continue to contribute to her community.
“As a future difference maker, I want to give back to my community. I see that as a highly valued use of my time and talents, as I care deeply about the people in my community,” says Candace.
The financial assistance provided by the Craig Norgate scholarship will allow Candace to spend more time doing what she’s passionate about within the community, and honing her skills at firm McCallum & Dallas Taranaki Chartered Accountants - where she is the unofficial Xero expert.
"The Craig Norgate scholarship will play a huge role in helping to fund my CA Program studies, allowing me time to study and work, without the pressure of needing to take on a second part- time job to fund my course work,” says Candace.
Candace’s advice for students who are looking to apply for a scholarship is to venture out into the community, get involved and put themselves out there.
“This will allow you to understand the needs of your community so that you can best serve them in your professional capacity.”

I could not encourage students more to apply for the Craig Norgate scholarship as it’s allowed me to take the next step in realising my dream as a difference maker,” says Candace.
